Victory Belles, World War II Museum, New Orleans Warehouse District

The Belles look great but their voices are even better.  The Victory Belles are at the World War II Museum in the New Orleans Warehouse District.  They put on a great show as well.  The Museum is now a world class facility in New Orleans.  You can keep up with what is going on by signing up for their news letter.  World War II Museum.  You may want to get involved after your visit…………….

“The Museum is moving full speed ahead on our newest attraction, the United States Freedom Pavilion: Land, Sea & Air. This $35 million addition to the growing Museum campus will honor all of the service branches who served in the war and display the large artifacts that served our country on land, on sea and in the air, including a restored Boeing B-17 and immersive submarine experience representing the USS Tang.”

“Opening in spring of 2012, the United States Freedom Pavilion was made possible by a generous donation from the Boeing Company and a Federal grant. During the war years, Boeing produced nearly 13,000 B-17s as part of the nation’s arsenal of democracy.”

Warehouse Art Galleries in New Orleans

The New Orleans Warehouse District is home to many of the Cities art galleries.  Many of the galleries are in buildings that are condos and these are commercial spaces at ground level.  Most are easy in and easy out spaces.  The warehouse feel really is a great way to show of the art.  This art gallery is on Julia Street where the majority of  galleries are located.

Warehouse District Condos, the red building!

The red one is on Tchoupitoulas on the corner of Girod.  You just do not see many red buildings but this one sticks out in the New Orleans Warehouse District .  Lots of windows and balconies.  Balconies tend to be very limited in the Warehouse District.

Wow! The Federal Fibre Mills has a great lobby!

Federal Fibre Mills Condos, Best New Orleans Lobby

The Federal Fibre Mills condos in the  New Orleans Warehouse District  was once a rope factory.  It did not look like this in 1900, it was a factory that supplied rope to the various interests up and down the Mississippi River.

The building was part of the New Orleans World Fair in 1984.  At this time it was place to house workers and was a German Beer Garden.  Once the World’s Fair was over it was eventually transformed into one of the first New Orleans Warehouse District Condos.  It remains one of the most impressive entrances of any condo complex in New Orleans.  Impressive!!

Lighthouse in the Warehouse District of New Orleans? More than an advertising gimmick?

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Lighthouse in the New Orleans Warehouse District

It’s great  advertising building for a Lighthouse glass art gallery at 743 Camp Street in the New Orleans Warehouse District.  Great way to advertise in earlier years before billboards took over.  Its not near the water and is mostly for show.  Going further back in time it makes perfect sense as to why it was built as a fake lighthouse.  It is now an historic feature on Camp Street.

“ This lighthouse was added to the existing structure in 1924 by the Lighthouse For The Blind as a thematic symbol, and served as their headquarters until 1948, when the group moved to another location. Since that time, the building has served various businesses, and presently houses the Lighthouse Glass art gallery. This distinctive building commands the block it is located on, and can be seen from several high-rise hotels in the area.”

New Orleans Warehouse District-Painted Band

Let’s call it wall culture or near side walk artwork.  It tends to stand out on Diamond Street in the Warehouse District of New Orleans.  The area is developing its own culture as warehouses are being converted into condos making this a unique  urban enviroment in New Orleans.   There is always something new in the area among the hundreds of old things.

Cotton Mill Condos, 433 corner condo

I just listed this 2 bedroom and two bath condo at the Cotton Mills in the New Orleans Warehouse District.  One of the best features of these units are the 18 ftl ceiling and very large windows.  This unit has 7-8 of these historic windows.  Add the original wood floors and exposed brick walls, you get the real New Orleans warehouse feel.  Its a canvas where you can add your touches.  The updates were done in 2006.  Visit my New Orleans condo site  for more photos under featured listings.

New Orleans, Home to Ruth’s Chris Steak House for 40 years!

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Ruths Chris Steak Warehouse District

The founder of Ruth’s Chris Steak House was a native of South Louisiana.  Ruth Fertel, a single mother of two bought Chris’s Steak house in 1965 against the advice of her banker and long odds of success.  She knew nothing about running a restaurant at that time.  The steak house was later changed to Ruth’s Chris Steak  House with a real New Orleans flavor.  It became a household name in New Orleans and was very successful. The local steak house  began expanding to other cities and areas.  It eventually become a national chain.  Ruth died in 2002 with Ruth’s Steak House a public company at that time.

The chain moved its headquarters to  Orlando after Hurricane Katrina rather than stay and rebuild.  It has never been the same since they left.  The restaurants are still here and are doing well.  Sorry they left town in such a hurry.

Federal Fibre Mills Courtyard, New Orelans Warehouse District

The Courtyards of the New Orleans Warehouse District are what you do not see if you are driving by.  These courtyards are in the middle of the city and yet could be miles away.   The courtyards are common areas for all the residents to enjoy.  The courtyard pictured above is the common courtyard of the Federal Fibre Mills located a block from the New Orleans Convention Center.    Check out the previous Federal Fibre Mills Post .

Cotton Mill Condos, The Large windows are winners in the New Orleans Warehouse District

The Cotton Mill Condos is a converted Cotton Mill dating from the late 1890’s that was converted to rental units in 1990 and later converted into condos.  It what I call a true New Orleans Warehouse condo that features 18 ft. ceiling, exposed brick, exposed beams, wood floors and yes the extra large windows.  The natural light and high ceilings really makes a small units look much larger.
